Judge Vigil was selected as the Democratic nominee for Supreme Court on June 10, 2018 after the announcement of Justice Chavez's early retirement. Judge Vigil understands the importance of keeping money out of judicial elections, which is why he is the only candidate for Supreme Court that sought and received public financing.

Judge Vigil serving on New Mexico's Court of Appeals Judge since 2003 has afforded him the opportunity to rule over 3,000 cases and authored over a thousand opinions covering nearly every facet of the law. Prior to being elected, Judge Vigil spent time litigating criminal and civil cases for nearly 30 years and was one of the original staff attorneys for the New Mexico Court of Appeals.
